Quake Update
A recent post to the comp.sys.mac.games.action newsgroup let everyone in on the current Quake isssues, here it is:

1) Quake v. 1.08.4 will be ready in the next few days and will be up on the website by next Monday (let me hedge my bets here by saying "hopefully by next Monday"). 1.08.4 will fix the gfx.wad thing so you can name your directory anything you want and not worry, and modem support will finally be in there. We are really sorry about any inconvenience the lack of modem support caused. It was simple oversight in the final stages of the testing. One line gets omitted from a testing checklist, and...
2) Quakeworld is not a dead issue. We have been letting Bruce get the modem working before we even begin to look at this. We are discussing the matter internally and that's about it right now, but we do want to get it out, most likely as shareware. We will try to keep the community posted on this as regularly as is possible. At the moment we are working very hard on other projects, so please bear with us. We have many products to keep track of (36 active products and 7 in development) and despite how much we like Quake, we also have to devote time to these other products.

Thanks, everyone, for your continued support, interest, and patience

Starfleet Academy 3Dfx patch coming
Interplay/MacPlay spokesperson Meghan Jenks indicated in a recent usenet newsgroup posting that their new PC/Mac title Starfleet Academy will indeed have 3Dfx support. The title is shipping without support for 3Dfx-based cards out of the box, but a patch should be available that will add 3Dfx support. Here are Meghan's comments:

Official word is that the game shipped without 3dfx support and it is being included in a patch that's in the works. That's all the info I have; when I get a date for the patch I will post it!
