Damage, Inc. level editing contest announced
Orion, the Damage, Inc. level editor, is out. To celebrate,
Paranoid Productions is sponsoring a Damage, Inc. level editing
contest. Here's the official press release:
To celebrate the recent release of the freeware Damage Incorporated map editor, Orion, Paranoid Productions in association with MacSoft is holding a contest to see who can cook up the best map, either single-player or network, for play with Damage Incorporated. Use Orion, MaraDamage & Forge, or whatever tools you like to cook up the most entertaining map possible remembering that the key to a good D.I. map is a subtle combination of shooting carnage and finessed strategy.
The Grand Prize for best map is a pleasing suite of MacSoft titles; the winner will receive one copy each of Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Civilization 2, Master of Orion 2, and Odyssey - The Legend of Nemesis, all for the Mac, as well as a special signed copy of Damage Incorporated and a Damage Incorporated T-shirt.
Some lucky runners-up will win receive Civilization 2, Quake, and Odyssey, as well as a Damage Incorporated T-shirt.
Orion can be found at http://www.cs.uchicago.edu/~alain/programs/orion.html or http://www.cs.uchicago.edu/~bcy1/damage.

VR Soccer Mac release in doubt; Baldur's Gate not coming to
Mac:
Interplay hasn't made
the many Mac friends lately. Over the course of a year, they've
cancelled Mac versions of NBA Jam, Tempest 2000,
Shattered Steel, Blood and Magic, and now VR Soccer is
looking like the latest victim.
Tikkabik broke the news
today in a conversation with Kirk Green (director of marketing and
communications for Interplay), where Green "reiterated Interplay's
previous assertions that issues such as a perceived lack of Mac
consumer demand, limited shelf space, and limited resources have
sharply reduced Interplay's ability to deliver new MacPlay titles.
Poor sales of VR Soccer's PC counterpart was also cited as a reason
for killing the Mac project." VR Soccer is still being bundled with
Techworks' Power3D
cards, which are shipping this week.
Interplay told MGL yesterday that their impressive 24-bit animated role-playing game, Baldur's Gate will not be released for the Mac. On a more positive note, Fallout, Starfleet Academy, and Carmageddon are definitely go for Mac under the Macplay label.

Piranha
Interactive continues Mac support, readies next title: Dead
Reckoning:
A high-quality adventure game and edutainment publisher, Piranha
Interactive continues to quietly release innovative games for the
Mac. It's first release, Majestic Part 1: Alien Encounter,
offers up a 3D animated adventure of a luxury space cruise ship which
disappears on its maiden voyage. The recently released hybrid sequel
to Majestic, Syn-Factor, offers up more amazing 3D animation,
original soundtrack and an expanded gaming theater, along with an
intriging storyline.
Piranha Interactive is now venturing into the world of 3D gaming with its latest project in the works, entitled Dead Reckoning. This game offers a new 3D design that allows a 60% reduction of processor power to run the Artificial Intelligence and allows more variation on its behavior. Dead Reckoning takes full advantage of hardware acceleration cards as well, allowing game play in high resolutions up to 24-bit color. You can even fight other gamers with its multi-player support over the Internet using a modem, via IPX, or direct connection. In Dead Reckoning, you can even set up a custom game with select ships, cylinders, and races. This advanced software produces lighting and sound effects that are so real, you'll swear you've really been abducted!
Visit the Dead Reckoning web site for downloadable movies, more screenshots, and info. Visit Piranha Interactive's web site for more on their two previous titles and great edutainment products. Dead Reckoning is currently scheduled for a late September release. It could be the sleeper hit of the summer!

Legend Entertainment
indicates Wheel of Time likely coming to Mac:
According to a source within Legend Entertainment (a predominantly PC
game developer/publisher), it is likely that Wheel of Time (based on
the Unreal engine) will be ported over to the Mac. Although
the key word here is "likely", it is still good news for Mac gamers
that a PC game publisher such as Legend is considering a Mac title.
However, don't expect to see this out anytime soon. It will be
release after the release of Unreal (a next generation 3D
action game in development by Maverick Software; scheduled for
January '98 release), perhaps during the first quarter of 1998. You
can expect that it will support 3D hardware, specifically the 3Dfx
chipset, which will be almost required on slower PowerPC systems.

Techworks' Power3D card
shipping update:
According to those who are inquiring about their Power3D orders,
Techworks has begun shipping small amounts of their 3Dfx cards this
week. Why "small" amounts? It turns out that the 3rd party company
that was manufacturing the passthrough cables wired them wrong. So
the cables had to be sent back! Those waiting for their cards will
have to tack on a few more days of waiting...but don't blame
Techworks.
