    Acme Oyster House, New Orleans

Acme Oyster House in the New Orleans French Quarter, during a July 2022 trip.

Acme has been shucking oysters since 1910 and is best known for its chargrilled oysters, along with raw oysters on the half shell, po’ boys and gumbo. The photos include the restaurant’s famous neon sign and some of the dishes.

The original location on Iberville Street, just off Bourbon Street, almost always has a line, but it moves steadily.

Beignets at Café Beignet in the New Orleans French Quarter.

Beignets are New Orleans’ signature treat: square pillows of fried dough piled with powdered sugar, best eaten hot with a café au lait. The photo shows a fresh plate.

Café Beignet has several locations in the Quarter, including on Royal Street and Bourbon Street, and the lines are usually shorter than at the more famous Café du Monde.

    First meal in New Orleans

The first meal of a July 2022 trip to New Orleans.

The photos show chargrilled oysters, a New Orleans speciality where oysters are topped with garlic butter and cheese and cooked over a flame, served with French bread for the butter, along with other dishes from the meal.

There’s no better way to start a New Orleans trip than with a plate of oysters.
